Services Dental Prosthesis

This specialty has been practiced by Dr. Sérgio Pereira at Previdente since it was founded in 1997; however, due to the growing number of patients, in 2001 other professionals were hired to perform it, among which Dr. José Carlos Miceli who obtained his degree in 1966.

This page illustrates the attention and care given to Previdente patients. We would like to point out that we are currently implementing a Quality Management System in view of obtaining Quality certification (ISO 9001).

What are dental prostheses?

They are prosthetic apparatuses that replace natural lost teeth.
In order for the teeth to function properly they must be well balanced on the upper and lower dental arcs. The loss of a single tooth will unbalance this system of forces and the teeth will move, migrating to compensate the loss. Spaces are created, unevenness occurs and chewing and aesthetics suffer. The teeth need to be replaced.

What types of prostheses are available?

There are four types of prostheses:
1. Fixed partial or fixed bridge;
2. Removable partial or removable bridge;
3. Complete removable or denture;
4. Fixed or movable over implants.

Selecting the type of prosthesis to use depends on the amount and location of lost teeth, among other factors.

What types of materials are used to construct a prosthesis?
  ACRYLIC PORCELAIN

Advantagess

  • they do not make noise when the patient chews or speaks;

  • risk of breakage is lower;

  • easy to perform occlusive adjustments.

  • colour stability;

  • easy to clean;

  • clinically insignificant wear.

Disavantages

  • changes colour and shape;

  • requires greater cleaning care;

  • wears out with use.

  • they make noise when the patient chews or speaks;

  • abrasion of the natural opposing teeth;

  • greater risk of breakage.

What type of care should be taken to maintain oral hygiene?

  • Brush your tongue with soft strokes using a soft brush and “Elgydium” toothpaste or tongue cleaner sold on the market;
  • Rinse your mouth with oral ant-sceptics;
  • Brush your teeth properly with the appropriate toothbrush (ask our professionals)..

What type of care should be taken with the prosthesis?

  • After the prosthesis is installed you should only eat soft foods (first days); over time you can eat solid foods as long as you chew slowly and uniformly, in order to control the denture and the pressure on the gums when you bite;
  • Clean the prosthesis after meals using a separate prosthesis brush with dual length bristles;
  • There is a line of effervescent products available for chemical hygienization of prostheses, but this does not replace hygienization with toothpaste and brush;
  • In the case of fixed prostheses, you should use a spiral brush and toothpaste.

When should the prosthesis be replaced?

Complete prostheses should be replaced every 5 years. During those 5 years the patient should visit his/her dentist for periodic checkups on the gums and verification of the occlusive adjustments.
Movable prostheses should be inspected every 4 months.
Fixed prostheses can be maintained for a lifetime with proper maintenance.
